The Texas baseball team announced on Monday that shortstop Adrian Rodriguez is considered “week-to-week” as he addresses the re-aggravation of an injury to his left hand.
Twenty-seven games into his sophomore season, Rodriguez is hitting .271 with a team-high 10 doubles and eight stolen bases. Despite hitting in the heart of the Texas lineup, Rodriguez has not yet homered and he has produced just 18 RBIs.
Defensively, Rodriguez has posted a .974 fielding percentage in his first season as the Texas shortstop. He has committed two errors.
Texas will debut its Rodriguez-less lineup at home Tuesday against Texas State. Rodriguez has been UT’s starting shortstop in all of its games, but starting third baseman Temo Becerra played that position for multiple seasons at Stanford. If Becerra shifts to shortstop, Texas could conceivably move first baseman Casey Borba back to third base since that’s where Borba played last year. That could open up reps at first base for Wichita State transfer Josh Livingston.
Ranked No. 2 in the D1Baseball poll, Texas (23-4) has SEC series at South Carolina and Texas A&M scheduled during the next two weeks. Following last week’s sweep of rival Oklahoma, UT is 7-2 in its conference games.
