Frenship HS Chess places 17th at national competition

  • March 30, 2026

CHICAGO, Ill. (KCBD) – The Frenship High School chess team made School history, placing among the top 20 teams at the USCF National Chess Tournament in Chicago this past weekend.

Earlier this month, the FHS chess team earned their spot on the national stage after winning the JV State Championship title at the 2026 Texas Chess Association Super State Tournament. While at nationals, the team’s mental fortitude was put to the test with some matches lasting more than three hours.

“Mental fatigue is always something these students battle in these tournaments especially with three games a day,” said Aberdeen Freo, FHS Chess Coach. “I’m so proud of these Tigers for never giving up!”

At the end of the tournament, FHS placed 17th out of 52 teams across the nation in the UV 1200 section. In this same tournament, Lubbock-Cooper also competed and placed 36th.
