EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after the El Paso Fire Department responded to a structure fire in Central El Paso. A man was found and appeared to have sustained injuries consistent with being assaulted, reported by the El Paso Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit.

Early Saturday morning, March 28, police were dispatched to the 700 block of North Ochoa Street.

David Garcia, 33, from Chaparral, New Mexico, is suspected of being responsible for the assault against 47-year-old Salome J. Lares.

El Paso Police identified the suspect and victim as General Delivery, which means they were both homeless.

Lares was taken to a burn unit in Lubbock and was last listed in critical condition, according to a release from the El Paso Police Department.

The El Paso Fire Department’s Fire Marshals office is continuing to investigate the cause of the structure fire.
