Will San Antonio ever know the sweet, fluffy goodness of Waffle House’s signature fried fare? According to incoming construction projects filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, likely not anytime soon.Â
The chain is building out a handful of new outposts in Texas, with not a single one set to settle down in San Antonio.Â
That’s right — according to the chain’s most recent project filing, Waffle House is skipping over the Alamo City once again in favor of Splendora, a small Houston-area town with a population of around 2,250 people. If you’re not familiar, Houston already has at least a dozen Waffle House locations scattered across the city and beyond.
San Antonio has been begging for a Waffle House chain for years, with residents even establishing a Change.org petition in November 2021 to bring an outpost to the city.Â
“Waffle House is not just a restaurant with delicious food. Waffle House is an institution!!” petition founder Quentin Satterwhite wrote. “The people of San Antonio should not have to travel to other cities to enjoy the greatness that is Waffle House. This city should have a few of its own and it is way overdue!”
People have been craving the taste of Waffle House so much in San Antonio that the desire has seemed to spark viral online hoaxes. In July 2025, a digitally altered site plan on r/sanantonio claimed a Waffle House was coming to Potranco and SH 211, which developers said was fake.Â
For now, it seems San Antonio will have to keep driving past its own cravings, because even with a population nearing 1.5 million, the city keeps getting outpaced by tiny Texas towns when it comes to landing a Waffle House.
