There are a couple of things that will bring our entire city together in record time. Some of them are funny. Some of them are frustrating. Most of them remind you that at the end of the day, this place really does take care of its own.
Let’s start with the obvious: weather.
Nothing unites people around here quicker than stepping out the front door and getting hit by a wall of dirt. It doesn’t matter who you are. Student. Oilfield worker. Teacher. Retiree. If it’s blowing 50 mph, we’re all in this thing together.
Another big one that unites us is bad drivers on the loop. You could be total strangers with someone, but the second they cut through 3 lanes of traffic without a turn signal, we all collectively hate them. That’s bonding.

But, really, it’s not just the funny stuff.
Sometimes, serious things happen around here. Loss. Tragedy. Moments that shake everyone to their core. Lubbock exhibits a distinct kind of unity when it comes to serious matters, as well.

You’ll see it in the way people check on one another. Strangers become neighbors overnight. People rally around one another through times of great heartache and stress.
When bad things happen in the world, it reminds us what it means to come together. It’s the fundraisers, the packed parking lots for benefit concerts, the hugs, and the quiet understanding that if someone around here needs help, we’ll be there for them.

We might argue about the small stuff, complain about the wind, and roll our eyes at each other in traffic, but when it really matters, we’re all in it together. At least that’s how it’s always felt to me.
If you’ve been here long enough, you probably know what I mean.
