EL PASO, Texas (KFOX 14, CBS 4) — The dream of winning a soccer state championship continues for the Americas Trailblazers and the Burges Mustangs. The last El Paso school to win a soccer state title was San Elizario back in 2024.
On Tuesday, both Americas and Burges played in region finals, the equivalent of the state quarterfinals.
In 5A Division I, Americas smashed Aledo 6-1. America’s senior Mathias Loyamier led the way scoring a hat trick. Daniel Escobar, Alexis Martinez and Ian Alsina each scored for the Trailblazers as well.
“It feels so good,” Loyamier said as the team bus arrived back in El Paso. “I am very proud of this team. We have accomplished so much and now we need to keep going.”
Americas will now face Walnut Grove in the state semifinals on Friday.
“I know my players are ready,” Americas head coach Jair Olivares said. “Since preseason, we have been working really hard. All that hard work is paying off. We need to keep working hard and have our objective in front of us all the time.”
In 5A Division II, Burges scored in the dying seconds to take a 1-0 victory over Wyatt. With less than 20 seconds left in double overtime, Burges sent a free kick into the box. The second ball would fall to the feet of Christian Quintana, who volleyed in the game winner.
Burges now will face off against Wakeland in the semifinals on Friday.
