HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — An armed man is dead after he was shot by police in southwest Houston on Wednesday, according to authorities.

The Houston Police Department said officers responded to an apartment complex on West Bellfort Avenue at about 11:18 a.m. after getting reports of a man who was “displaying a knife in a threatening manner.”

Adrian Rodriguez with HPD said the call was made from the front lobby of the complex, reporting that the man was in the parking lot “making a jabbing motion in the air with a butcher knife.”

That’s when officers were directed to an upstairs apartment where the suspect was, and saw people come out of that unit.

“As they made the approach to the scene upstairs, the suspect abruptly came out with a large butcher knife — coming out of the complex towards the officers, and the officers discharged multiple rounds to the suspect,” Rodriguez said, adding that the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Rodriguez, three officers discharged their weapons and, as customary, will be placed on a three-day administrative leave.

Police said no one else was hurt in the incident.

“Very difficult situation,” Rodriguez said.

According to police, the suspect, who has not yet been identified, was 49 years old.

It’s unclear if the suspect lived at the complex.
