As the largest state along the U.S.-Mexico border, Texas isn’t short on great burritos. And Thursday gives fans an extra reason to indulge: It’s National Burrito Day.
The burrito — Spanish for “little donkey” — likely emerged from the blending of Mexican and European foods after the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, according to food historian Jeffrey Pilcher in Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food.
The name may come from burros, or donkeys, used by street vendors to carry and sell the food. The animals often hauled cylindrical bedrolls resembling the shape of modern burritos.
Several chains and restaurants in Central Texas are marking National Burrito Day with deals and freebies. Here’s where to find them Thursday:
Chipotle is bringing back its digital “Burrito Vault” game, where customers can win a share of more than $2 million in prizes. This year includes a new “Double Protein” mode.
The chain is also offering $0 delivery fees on digital orders using code “DELIVER.”
Dog Haus rewards members can get a Haus Burrito for $3 on Thursday. Limit one per member; in-store only.
Qdoba rewards members can get a free burrito or bowl with the purchase of an entrée or drink. The deal excludes quesadillas and is available in-store and online.
Torchy’s is offering a $5 breakfast burrito in-store only until 2 p.m. Thursday.
