SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Joshua Orta’s death an accident caused by conflagration injuries.

Orta, 25, was identified as a key witness in a separate fatal shooting involving federal agents. He died in a crash in late February near the I-35 Frontage Road and Powell Road.

San Antonio police say Orta was speeding when he attempted to take a curved exit and lost control of the vehicle. The car crashed into a pole and caught fire. Several others inside the vehicle were able to escape and attempted to rescue Orta, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

Orta’s death comes months after he was identified as a key witness in a separate fatal shooting involving federal agents.

According to Newsweek, Orta was the sole witness to the March 15, 2025 shooting death of Ruben Ray Martinez by a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent in South Padre Island. Orta, a close friend of Martinez, was the only passenger in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
