One Tarrant County restaurant was temporarily closed during the March 22-28 health inspections, and gnats and dirty ice were found at other locations, according to data from the county compiled by the Star-Telegram.
The new Tarrant County Public Health system considers 100 as the highest possible score, while 70 is considered extremely poor. Restaurants and other places that serve food that score below 70 require a follow-up inspection.
Quik Sak, a convenience store located at 769 N. Las Vegas Trail in White Settlement, scored 69 on March 24. The inspector found particle growth and some kind of yellow substance in the ice machine and an orange substance in the ice chute of the soda fountain. Ice in the machine, soda fountain and self-serve freezer had a yellow tint.
The facility was required to destroy all the ice and thoroughly clean the machines. The store wasn’t allowed to sell ice until a follow-up inspection could be conducted, according to the report.
Another Quik Sak, located at 8801 Clifford St. in White Settlement, was not given a score. The drink area requires a follow-up inspection after gnats were seen flying out of the cappuccino machine. The manager reported to the inspector that the area was already closed. The store was required to post signs about the closure and obtain the services of a licensed pest control operator.
Four other food establishments received low scores:
Smoothie King at 775 Grapevine Highway in Hurst scored 75 on March 27. The posted health permit was expired, meat was thawing on the counter and there was mold in one of the reach-in refrigerators. The establishment voluntarily closed pending a follow-up inspection, but no clear reason was given in the report.Ista Indian Cuisine at 2140 E. Southlake Blvd. in Southlake scored 77 on March 26. Several food items were stored without date markings, raw chicken was thawing in the designated mop sink and grease was accumulated on the vent hood.Armend’s Pizza and Pasta at 2315 E. Southlake Blvd. in Southlake scored 78 on March 26. The inspector found black and pink grime around the chute of the ice machine, ground beef thawing at room temperature and employees without hair restraints.Joe’s Pizza Pasta Subs at 1101 E. Northwest Parkway in Southlake scored 78 on March 25. Some pizza toppings were held at an unsafe temperature, raw chicken was stored above shredded cheese in the cooler and some employees weren’t wearing hair restraints.
Roaches were found at two locations:
El Tequilas Mexican Restaurant at 8705 Clifford St. in White Settlement scored 80 on March 24. The inspector saw a dead American cockroach under the water heater in the back room and found some roach droppings near the ice machine.New Diamond Grocery at 3516 Harwood Road in Bedford scored 81 on March 24. A dead roach was found behind a cooler at the front entrance.
Tarrant County Public Health inspects and scores all restaurants in the county except for those in Fort Worth, Arlington, Euless and North Richland Hills.
