The South Carolina baseball team used a five-run second inning on its way to a 9-1 win over No. 2 Texas Thursday night (April 2) in the opener of the three-game SEC series at Founders Park.South Carolina put up a five-spot in the second after Talmadge LeCroy walked and KJ Scobey doubled to put two men on with no outs. Hollins grounded out to knock in LeCroy before Craddock singled to send home Scobey. Patrick Evans tripled, sending home a pair. A Tyler Bak double capped the inning to make it 5-0 Gamecocks.The Longhorns put up a run in the third on a solo home run, but Carolina grabbed one of their own off a Craddock RBI single in the bottom of the frame for a 6-1 advantage.Evans and LeCroy added insurance behind the Gamecocks’ win with home runs, Evans a two-run shot in the sixth and LeCroy a solo blast in the seventh.The Gamecock pitching staff gave up just six hits on the night, with Zach Russell earning the win to improve to 3-0. He punched out four, giving up no hits in 2.1 innings of work. Alex Philpott picked up the save without surrendering a hit or a run in the last three innings. Alex Valentin got the start for the Gamecocks, striking out five, giving up just one run.Four Gamecocks had multi-hit nights, with Evans leading the way with three safeties.
