EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A routine traffic stop in East El Paso resulted in the arrest of a 48-year-old man after deputies discovered suspected methamphetamine in his possession back in February, according to an affidavit filed by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say the incident occurred around 4:18 p.m. near the 15300 block of Alameda Avenue on February 19, where a gray Dodge Avenger was pulled over for traveling 69 mph in a posted 55 mph zone.

The driver, identified as Adrian Esparza, told the deputy he did not have a driver’s license or Texas identification and claimed he had lost his wallet.

Esparza told the deputy he was coming from a school where he is employed under Fabens ISD and was on his way to his mother’s residence, according to the affidavit.

KFOX14/CBS4 reached out to Fabens ISD to confirm whether he is still employed or not at Fabens ISD but we have not heard back from the district.

Esparza’s name also does not show up in the Fabens ISD staff directory as of April 3.

Esparza also shared that he was not the registered owner of the vehicle, and it belonged to his friend, who gave him permission to drive it, according to the document.

During the stop, Esparza reportedly appeared nervous and fidgety, prompting further investigation.

Authorities later discovered Esparza had an active criminal warrant out of Gillespie County.

After being asked to step out of the vehicle, he consented to a search. Deputies reported finding a yellow plastic baggie containing a white crystal-like substance inside his jacket pocket, according to the document.

According to the affidavit, the substance weighed approximately 2.12 grams and tested positive for methamphetamine using a TruNarc analyzer.

Esparza denied ownership of the substance, claiming the jacket belonged to a friend, the affidavit stated.

However, deputies placed him under arrest on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, a state jail felony under Texas law.

He was transported to the Deputy Peter J. Herrera Station and booked into a holding cell later that evening.

The case has been submitted for prosecution, and formal charges are pending.
