EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — Sylvia Belmontes, Ysleta Independent School District’s Director of Student Health Services, has been named the 2025-26 Texas School Nurse Administrator of the Year by the Texas School Nurses Organization, YISD announced Monday.
According to YISD, with 18 years of experience in school nursing, Belmontes is being recognized for her outstanding contributions to student health and mentorship as she has been instrumental in elevating Ysleta ISD’s focus on whole-child wellness.
Belmontes, who has been leading a team of over 70 nurses for the last six years, has coordinated care that addresses students’ physical and emotional needs.
Her peers describe her as a mentor who supports emerging nurse leaders in navigating school health services, the district said.
Belmontes will be honored at the TSNO annual conference in November.
TSNO Executive Director Becca Harkleroad praised Belmontes, saying, “We commend Ysleta ISD for fostering an environment that values and supports exceptional nursing leadership. Ms. Belmontes’ achievements reflect the district’s commitment to student success and comprehensive health programs.”
As chair of the Southwest School Nurse Alliance, Belmontes has also united directors, coordinators, and lead nurses from nine El Paso-area districts to collaborate and share best practices. She also spearheads the Alliance’s annual conference, which covers critical topics like student mental health and nutrition, the district said.
Belmontes will receive her award Nov. 1-2 at the TSNO conference in The Woodlands.
