The Texas Relays welcomes the top athletes from across the world every year, but Friday’s high school events showed that some of the best up-and-coming stars are from right here in the Lone Star State.Â
During the preliminary rounds of the boys’ 110-meter hurdles, Klein Collins High School senior Andrew Jones blew away the competition with a 12.97-second 110-meter hurdles. While helped by a tailwind of +2.8Â m/s, just above the 2.0 m/s legal limit, Jones became the first high school athlete ever in Texas Relays history to run a sub-13-second 110-meter hurdles time, securing the all-conditions record.Â
For context of just how fast this is: Grant Holloway, who represented Team USA in the Paris 2024 Olympics, won gold in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 12.99 seconds.Â
This isn’t the first time that Jones has broken records. His 35.07-second time in the 300-meter hurdles from earlier this spring surpassed Robert Griffin III’s longstanding record time of 35.33 seconds.
He then broke it again at the Bluebonnet Invite, running a blistering 34.97 seconds. According to MileSplit, he’s the second high school athlete in history to ever break 35 seconds in the event.Â
Jones went on to win the Division II boys’ 110-meter hurdles at the Texas Relays with a time of 13.15 seconds with a wind-legal tail wind of 1.9 m/s.
