OREM, Utah – The UT Arlington softball team won the weekend series finale, 9-7, over Utah Valley on Saturday afternoon at Wolverine Softball Field in Orem, Utah.
The Mavericks now move to a 16-19 overall record and a 5-4 record in WAC play.
UTA was led at the plate by Kelsey Creech, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a home run. Mia McNulty also had a standout day, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run, as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UTA struck first in the top of the second inning as Kelsey Creech drove in Kaylee Schweitzer with an RBI, giving the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
Utah Valley answered in the bottom half of the inning when Payge Armendariz lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Mackenzie Wright to score and even the game at 1-1.
In the top of the third, Mia McNulty put UTA back in front with an RBI double to left center, scoring Talia Maldonado for a 2-1 lead. Dee McClarity followed with an RBI double of her own to left center, bringing home McNulty and extending the Mavericks’ advantage to 3-1.
In the bottom of the third, UVU’s Bailey Marvin launched a three-RBI home run to deep left field, giving the Wolverines their first lead of the game, 4-3.
In the top of the fourth, UTA responded with a two-run home run to left field from Creech, putting the Mavericks back on top, 5-4. The homer marked her third of the weekend series and sixth of the season.
UVU answered in the bottom half of the inning as Armendariz delivered an RBI double to left center, tying the game at 5-5. Later, Britney Moreno singled to center field, driving in Armendariz and giving the Wolverines a 6-5 lead.
More action followed in the top of the sixth as Marley Neises stole second after reaching first. One batter later, Creech singled up the middle to drive in Neises, tying the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the sixth, UVU’s Tatum Hall singled to deep left, RBI, scoring Moreno and giving the lead back to the Wolverines, 7-6.
UTA regained the lead in the seventh due to a two-run homer, blasted off the bat of McNulty, making it 8-7. Later, Peyton Holland followed with an RBI single to center, pushing the Mavericks’ advantage to 9-7.
UVU was not able come back in the bottom half of the inning, as UTA secured the series finale win, 9-7.
NEXT UP
The Mavericks will return home next Friday for a weekend series against California Baptist Valley with a doubleheader scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., at Allan Saxe Field.
