The two teens were reportedly inside an apartment Sunday when one of them accidentally shot the other in the chest, police say.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A 16-year-old boy is in custody after fatally shooting another 16-year-old boy in the chest on Sunday evening, in what Fort Worth police are calling a “tragic accident.”

According to Fort Worth Police Department Public Information Officer Tracy Carter, officers were called at about 5:17 p.m. to an apartment complex where officers found the victim with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is still ongoing, but police say the two teens were inside the apartment when one of them accidentally fired a gun, striking the other in the chest.

Police have arrested the suspected shooter, officials said. Homicide detectives will investigate what led to the incident.

“This is very much a tragic accident,” Carter said during a press conference Sunday. “Please, if you don’t know how to use a gun and you’re young and you’re not supposed to have a gun, put those guns down.”

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the victim and determine the official cause and manner of death, officials say.
