Lubbock mother says arrest brings answers she’s been seeking since son’s death

  • October 27, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Myesha Thomas and KCBD’s Imani Jackson have spoken several times since her son, Lawrence Brantley, was taken from her in August. Each time, she held onto hope that she would one day get answers.

When she got the call from detectives saying the man accused of killing her son was in custody, she said it felt like the missing piece of a painful puzzle finally clicked into place.

“When I answered he let me know who he was and he was like, ‘Ms. Thomas I just want you to know we have Mr. Taylor in custody,’” Thomas said. “From there so many things were going through my mind. I’m very grateful that he’s in custody now but I’m also like, man we’re talking about a murderer somebody that just took my son’s life.”

Kendrick “Skrilla” Taylor was arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in connection with Brantley’s death.

According to investigators, Brantley was trying to break up an argument between a man and woman when he was hit with a glass bottle and later shot.

“I’m angry, angry, angry and hurt because at the end of the day, his life should have never been taken,” Thomas said. “Even though I have my answers I’m still angry behind it because now I know the real reason why his life was taken and it’s just unfair.”

Before the arrest, Thomas was desperate for answers. She finally has them, but with them came a deeper understanding of her son’s last moments.

“For no reason and I’m going to keep saying that,” Thomas said. “There was no reason at all for them to have to hit him with a bottle and then shoot him and kill him. That was all uncalled for everybody should have just walked away.”

Thomas plans to be at every court hearing once Taylor is brought back to Texas.

Thomas says she’s thankful to law enforcement for not giving up on the case. Taylor remains in custody and is charged with murder.
