UMC Health System clarifies in-network access for United Healthcare patients

  • April 6, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – UMC Health System is clarifying in-network access for patients covered by United Healthcare following the expiration of a contract between Texas Tech Health Sciences Center providers and the insurance company.

The contract expired last week, affecting tens of thousands of people.

While HSC providers may deliver care in UMC facilities, their services are billed separately and are no longer considered in-network for United Healthcare plans.

Patients can still go to UMC for medical care, but at a higher out-of-pocket cost.

UMC is advising patients to check before services to know who their doctor is affiliated with. Patients with questions about their coverage, benefits or potential out-of-pocket costs should call their insurance provider.
