UNtrash It launches in North Texas, turning moving day into a way to keep clothing out of landfills
Cleaning out a closet is easy. Knowing what to do with what’s left behind is not. This Earth Month, a new program is expanding into Dallas with the goal of making that decision simpler. UNIQLO’s UNtrash It initiative, developed in partnership with Piece of Cake Moving and Storage and WM, is designed to give unwanted clothing a second life, without sending it to a landfill.
The program builds on UNIQLO’s long-running RE.UNIQLO initiative, and is now available in Dallas, alongside New York and Los Angeles.
Why This Program Exists
Clothing waste continues to be a growing issue, not necessarily because people don’t want to donate, but because the process is often inconvenient.
During moments like moving or decluttering, large amounts of clothing are often discarded simply because there isn’t an easy alternative. UNtrash It is designed to meet that exact moment, offering a built-in solution when people are already sorting through what to keep and what to let go.
For Dallas residents planning a move, the program is integrated directly into the process. Customers who book with Piece of Cake Moving can set aside unwanted clothing in designated bags, which are then collected alongside their move. From there, items are routed through UNIQLO’s RE.UNIQLO system, where they are sorted for donation or recycling.
Wearable items are directed to organizations that can reuse them, while damaged or unwearable pieces are processed through WM’s textile sorting infrastructure, helping divert materials from landfills.
Not Moving? There’s Still An Option
The program isn’t limited to relocations. Anyone can drop off clothing at UNIQLO stores using RE.UNIQLO collection bins. Items are sorted into those that can be reused and those that can be recycled into new materials, offering a year-round alternative to throwing clothing away.
As part of the program’s expansion, UNIQLO, Piece of Cake and WM are fully funding UNtrash It during Earth Month, making participation free for consumers.
The goal is to remove cost and convenience barriers at the same time, two of the biggest reasons clothing ends up in landfills.
The Bigger Shift Behind It
UNtrash It is part of a broader push toward what’s known as a circular system, where clothing is reused or repurposed rather than discarded.
UNIQLO has been collecting pre-worn garments for more than 20 years through its RE.UNIQLO program, but this expansion moves that effort beyond stores and into everyday life, particularly during moments when people are most likely to dispose of clothing.
By connecting moving logistics, in-store collection and large-scale textile processing, the program is attempting to solve a practical problem with a more integrated approach.
What To Know Before Participating
The program is now available in Dallas and is free to use during Earth Month. Clothing can be donated either during a move through Piece of Cake Moving or year-round through in-store collection bins at UNIQLO locations.
For many households, it offers a straightforward alternative to throwing clothing away, especially during the times when it’s easiest to do so.
