A piece of comedy lore from your childhood apparently has a soft spot for Texas barbecue. Yes, the actor, whose character became a household name in the mid 2000s, made his way to North Texas for barbecue while touring with a homegrown musician.
Christopher Mintz-Plasse has been acting for 20 years, garnering recognition for his roles in Kick-Ass and the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, but he will forever be remembered for his debut role as Fogell in SuperBad. In the Michael Cera and Jonah Hill-led comedy, Mintz-Plasse’s character attempts to buy liquor with a fake ID that only has the one name “McLovin.” Ever since, Mintz-Plasse has been colloquially known as “McLovin” whenever he’s spotted across the country, including a recent visit to a major Texas barbecue joint.
Mintz-Plasse was spotted this weekend at Hurtado Barbecue in Dallas, one of four smokehouses from pitmaster Brandon Hurtado, who recently gained notoriety for feeding the cast of Landman. Hurtado shared pictures of Mintz-Plasse’s visit on Monday, April 6, with the caption “When McLovin pays a visit to your restaurant…of course on my day off!”
The Facebook post has received nearly 500 likes as of Wednesday, April 8, with dozens responding to the celeb sighting.
“It’s like the most popular name in the world. read a book…,” Kevin Alexander Smith replied. While Donald Huddy added, “Texas loves McLovin.”
Ben Brady added praise to Hurtado Barbecue, saying, “It would be awesome if Hurtado becomes the new celebrity stop instead of Joe Ts.”
However, the majority of comments noted that Hurtado’s post totally disregarded the presence of indie singer Ben Kweller, for whom Mintz-Plasse plays bass guitar in his band. Kweller, a North Texas native from Greenville, is in the middle of his U.S. and Canada tour, performing in Dallas on Tuesday, April 7, and in Austin on Wednesday. So, keep your eyes peeled if Mintz-Plasse, Kweller and company make another pit stop for Texas barbecue during their visit to the Lone Star State.
