LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The State of Texas wants to find out if Lubbock and more than a thousand other municipal governments have illegally raised their property taxes.
Attorney General Ken Paxton says he wants to make sure these cities are following financial transparency laws.
Last year, the legislature ordered cities to complete and publicly post annual financial audits with a deadline. If they fail to do that, they cannot approve a tax rate above the no-new-revenue rate, which keeps revenue the same as the year before.
At this point, the AG’s office is only requesting documents. He hasn’t accused any of the cities of wrongdoings.
The City of Lubbock has not yet commented. The city publishes comprehensive and popular financial audits each year on its website.
