SAN ANTONIO – Military families will receive 10,000 literacy kits this month through a partnership between USAA and United Through Reading.
Each kit includes a children’s book, bookmarks and handwritten messages of encouragement. The effort involves all of USAA’s campuses, including San Antonio, where nearly 300 employees will help assemble 3,000 of the kits.
“Currently there’s about 1.6 million military kids. 200 thousand are under the age of five. So this is something that we do to take care if our own,” said Susan MacCabe, USAA assistant vice president of corporate impact.
The kits also include a plush, a journal, matching dog tags for both the child and deployed parent, as well as postcards and access to online support materials.
