EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Drivers across the Borderland are continuing to feel pain at the pump as gas prices in El Paso have climbed above the state average.
According to AAA, the average price for regular unleaded gas in El Paso has now surpassed $4 a gallon, up 10 cents from a week ago. That puts El Paso among the highest-priced cities in Texas for gas, with the statewide average sitting at $3.87 and the national average at $4.17.
Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas-New Mexico, said the increase continues to be driven by instability in the global energy market.
“Prices are certainly elevated and they continue to be because of geopolitical tensions, uncertainty, and how the markets are reacting when it comes to the price of crude oil,” Armbruster said.
Armbruster said as long as uncertainty remains in the oil market, drivers could continue to see fluctuations at the pump and possible increases in the weeks ahead.
For people who rely on their vehicles to make a living, the higher prices are creating additional financial pressure.
One local DoorDash driver told KTSM that gas costs are directly affecting his income, saying the majority of what he earns depends on deliveries.
“The majority of my income, I depend solely on my deliveries,” the driver said. “If I’m DoorDashing eight, nine hours a day, you’ll probably see me here at the gas station six, seven times.”
The driver added that filling up his tank can cost around $120, and likely more now because of the recent price increases.
The El Paso Chamber of Commerce said rising fuel costs are also a concern for businesses across the region.
In a statement to KTSM, the Chamber said in part:
“Rising fuel costs are a concern we are continuing to monitor closely, particularly for businesses that rely heavily on transportation, delivery, and logistics. In a region like El Paso, where cross-border trade and mobility are central to our economy, fluctuations in fuel prices can have a direct impact on operating costs.
“For many small and mid-sized businesses, increased fuel expenses can create added pressure on the margins, especially in industries such as food service, construction, and distribution. These costs are often difficult to absorb long-term and may result in adjustments to pricing, delivery fees, or operational efficiency strategies.”
The organization added that business continues to adapt to the changes.
AAA said drivers can help offset higher prices by maintaining steady speeds, avoiding unnecessary idling and making sure their tires are properly inflated to maximize fuel efficiency.
