San Antonio’s largest carne asada pop-up is returning with its annual cooking competition that challenges some of the city’s top chefs to put their fajitas to the test. But this year, there appears to be a slight change in order.
The Fajita Lounge is bringing back its Fajita Lounge Showdown for a fourth year, with festivities going from 5 p.m. to midnight on Sunday, April 12, at Gimme Gimme in Southtown. This time around, the event will feature nine competitors, four celebrity judges and a $10 cover at the door, according to a news release. In the past, the event has been advertised as free and first-come, first-served.
The lineup will include returning champs, Leche de Tigre, and challenging teams from The Magpie, Naco Mexican, Little Death, Aguazul, El Weinecero, Porc Slap, Burritos Dorada and San Antonio Fire Department Stations 7 and 28. The winning chef team will win $500 as a grand prize.
Judges will include Texas Monthly Taco editor José R. Ralat, San Antonio influencer Mike Dubya, Culturemap editor Brandon Watson and New York Times bestselling author ArnieTex, whose Arnie Asadas Seasonings will be used for the fajitas during the showdown. The Fajita Lounge Showdown will also feature a charro beans station that uses the same seasonings. Specialty cocktails made with Live Oak Vodka will be available during the event.
