Two of Central Texas’ most beloved and longest-running traditions are running full steam ahead this weekend amid a quintessentially Texas April forecast.
The 98th ABC Kite Fest returns to Zilker Park in Austin on Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., bringing with it thousands of spectators and dazzling kite displays glittering against the Texas capital’s skyline. Just after 1Â p.m. on Friday, April 10, event organizers said the festivities are proceeding as planned, with the potential of a slightly earlier finish time on Saturday to be determined at a later point to ensure the safety of attendees amid a rainy forecast.
“ABC Kite Fest will proceed as planned! (The changing weather is the fun of living here, right!?),” festival organizers wrote in the social media post. Event heads said they are in close contact with the city of Austin and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasters, and will make a final determination on an earlier event finish time — possibly at 3 p.m. — by 12 p.m. on Saturday. Further updates will be shared on ABC Kite Fest’s social media pages, and guests are encouraged to dress for rainy weather.
On Sunday, April 12, the 49th annual Statesman Cap10K returns to the Texas capital, with Texas’ largest 10K slated to kick things off at 8 a.m. The annual tradition welcomed 24,169 participants last year, a stark uptick from the 19,590 runners, joggers and walkers in 2024.
As of Friday afternoon, the race is revving full steam ahead, with the Cap10K race expo opening to the public at 12Â p.m. Race organizers did similarly note that any updates to the event will be shared throughout the weekend on its social media platforms, adding it’s a rain or shine event.
The National Weather Service’s Austin and San Antonio offices outlined their detailed weekend forecast, which noted a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10 a.m. on Saturday and a 50% chance of precipitation. For Sunday, the NWS forecast predicts both showers and thunderstorms, with a 60% chance of rain and the possibility of thunderstorms starting after 1 p.m.
