The Oklahoma Sooners face their toughest test of the season in Austin this weekend when they take on the defending national champion Texas Longhorns. The three-game series will have SEC title and NCAA tournament seeding implications, as two of the top teams take the field for what promises to be an electric weekend.

The Oklahoma Sooners come into the game in first place in the SEC standings. They are riding a five-game winning streak heading into the series with the Longhorns. Texas is two games behind the Sooners and is coming off a series loss to Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The Longhorns are 32-4 (9-3 SEC).

Coming into the game, the Oklahoma Sooners rank first in team batting average in SEC play and fourth in team ERA. Texas is fourth in team batting average and eighth in team ERA.

Now, the level of competition hasn’t been the same in conference play. The Longhorns have faced Texas A&M and Alabama, two top-25 teams, in recent weeks. South Carolina was ranked at the time of their three-game series. The four teams the Sooners have faced rank in the bottom five in the SEC standings at this point in the season. The one common opponent is Ole Miss. Both teams earned three-game sweeps of the Rebels. The Sooners outscored Ole Miss 29-4 in Oxford. Texas outscored the Rebels 36-7, earning three run-rule wins in Austin. However, Texas has lost three of its last four SEC games, allowing 27 runs in the three losses. Can it keep the Sooners from continuing the scoring trend off Longhorns pitchers?

Texas is a good team. It handed Oklahoma its first Women’s College World Series loss in last year’s tournament and won the series the last time OU traveled to Austin.

But can Texas’ pitching keep Oklahoma from lighting up the scoreboard? The Sooners rank first in the SEC in batting average, home runs, runs scored and stolen bases, and they rank second in walks.

The Sooners’ pitching staff will face a tough challenge in a Longhorns team averaging 6.41 runs per game in SEC play. But Oklahoma hasn’t allowed more than four runs in 12 straight games.

It’s a top-five matchup between two of the very best teams in college softball when the Oklahoma Sooners take on the Texas Longhorns, and here’s how you can tune into the action.
