A couple accused of killing a woman’s parents near San Antonio then fleeing with two young children – including a 1-month-old baby – were captured in Corpus Christi Wednesday, according to the Medina County Sheriff’s Office.

The case began earlier Wednesday when deputies in Medina County responded to a welfare concern after Stephen Rehbein failed to report to work, Sheriff Randy Brown said.
Deputies went to a home in the 3300 block of County Road 265 in Mico, a small community northwest of San Antonio near Medina Lake, where they found signs of possible foul play and evidence suggesting a crime had occurred, according to Brown.
“When the deputy arrived, he knocked on the door, and he couldn’t find anybody,” Brown said during a news conference on Friday. “He looked in a trash can on the curb and found some bloody items.”
Brown said that deputy called Criminal Investigate Division, and officers arrived to gather information and conduct an investigation.
“We all showed up and found more evidence that probably something had happened at the — residence,” Brown said.
During the investigation, officers identified several vehicles that belonged to Rehbein, including several on the property. One was missing, Brown said.
“Utilizing available technology, one of the vehicles was later located traveling in the Corpus Christi, Texas area,” Brown said. “We reached out to our partners there at the Corpus Christi Police Department and their Gang Unit got on it ASAP.”
According to Brown, CCPD officers stopped the vehicle to conduct a welfare check on Rehbein, but instead of finding Rehbein they found his stepdaughter Cassandra Lange, 29, and her boyfriend Joby Williams, 32. Inside of the car with Lange and Williams were a six-year-old child and a one-month old baby, Brown said.
“They had been pulling a cargo-box trailer that they unhooked in a parking lot for reasons we still don’t know,” Brown said. “(CCPD) Officers there with the gang unit had eyes on them when that happened. After they unhooked it, they drove around a little bit — they were pulled over.”
Brown said that a Medina County chief deputy and a Texas Ranger immediately traveled to Corpus Christi to question the pair.
During that interview, Lange admitted she and Williams killed her mother and stepfather and disposed of their bodies in a ravine, according to Brown.
“I’m not going to speculate on the motive,” Brown said “But when they left the residence, there were items stolen from (Lange’s mother). There were guns that were stolen, money, tools, and the vehicle — so you can figure out what the motive is. Was it for money? Property? I don’t really know. We don’t know yet, and they haven’t given that up yet. I can tell you that the female confessed, and we have a confession from her, and the male halfway confessed.”
That confession led deputies back to Medina County, where a Sheriff Brown said a difficult twilight search near Medina Lake uncovered two bodies concealed in garbage bags in a deep ravine off FM 1283.
“The search proved challenging due to nighttime conditions,” Brown said. “The location was not visible from the roadway and was discovered through careful scene observation by a deputy.”
Lange and Williams were taken into custody and charged with murder, according to Brown.
“The one month old belongs to him — biologically, the little girl is not his,” Brown said. “Thanks to CPS — we were able to get one of them back with her biological father.”
According to Nueces County jail records, Williams is also facing a charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle, with bond set at $20,000. His bond on the murder charge is set at $200,000. Lange’s bond was set at $150,000, according to the Sheriff Brown.
Brown said the children were placed with Child Protective Services and are being reunited with family members.
“The initial call was received on (Wednesday around noon),” Brown said. “Deputies arrived at the residence around 1:00 p.m., and the suspects were taken into custody at approximately 7:00 p.m. The swift coordination and diligent efforts of all agencies involved allowed this case to be rapidly developed and the suspects to be apprehended in a timely manner.”
Brown said the investigation remains ongoing. Williams remains in Nueces County Jail pending transfer to Medina County. Lange was transported back to Medina County the night of April 8.
