SAN ANTONIO – Police are on the scene after two hikers noticed fire and smoke and discovered a body on fire along the Leon Creek Greenway.

The body was found just before 9 a.m. Friday at the Prue Trailhead off Leon Creek Greenway on the Northwest Side.

“There were a couple of people on the trail that noticed a fire and smoke. So they they went to go investigate, and they saw a body, and immediately called the police,” explained Sgt Raul Cardenas from the San Antonio Police Department.

First responders quickly rushed to the scene, and the San Antonio Fire Department put out the flames. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Fire officials say the fire spread to nearby trees.

The San Antonio Police Department confirmed that the body was a woman, and evidence of an accelerant was found. Police later confirmed that the body was that of a 27-year-old woman.

“She was just near the trail here, in the woods, and she was there. There is some evidence of accelerant, and that she was set on fire. Now, how that happened exactly, we don’t know,” said Sgt Cardenas.

According to police, they are not investigating the incident as a crime, saying that “there are no criminal elements at this time.”

Still runners we spoke to said they will be going home.

“I don’t want to risk it and, you know, I don’t know what else is going on around here.” said runner Dawson Mosashek.
