EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — There is still time to weigh in on whether the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education should change the name of Cesar Chavez Elementary School.

This comes after allegations of sexual abuse surfaced against the Hispanic civil rights and labor rights icon. Chavez has been dead since 1993.

Las Cruces board seeks input on possible Cesar Chavez Elementary renaming

On Wednesday evening, April 8, the board hosted a special session at Cesar Chavez Elementary. Community members, including LCPS staff and Las Cruces residents, spoke both in favor of the name’s removal and preserving the school’s name as-is. No action was taken at the meeting; the special session agenda was specific to hearing public feedback.

Community members who wish to provide input may still do so by submitting comments via email to input@lcps.net. All feedback received through email will be compiled and shared with the Board of Education for consideration.

Wednesday’s meeting was also livestreamed. The video can be viewed by clicking on this link. The next scheduled meeting of the board is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 21 at the Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Administration Complex, 505 S. Main St.
