GEORGETOWN — Follow along for live updates during a busy Saturday for Houston-area teams at the UIL soccer state championships at Birkelbach Field.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Class 6A Division I boys: Atascocita vs. Klein Cain, 1:30 p.m.
Class 6A Division II girls: Kingwood vs. Forney, 4 p.m.
Class 6A Division II boys: Summer Creek vs. College Park, 6:30 p.m.
One of the key factors for today could be the weather. Here’s what The Weather Channel (weather.com) says to expect for each game:
Atascocita vs. Klein Cain: Expect the temperature to reach its peak near 80 degrees. Conditions will be humid with a roughly 30% chance of isolated thunderstorms.
Kingwood vs. Forney: Skies remain overcast and warm. Rain chances begin to trend upward, sitting closer to 40-45% as scattered showers develop across Central Texas.
Summer Creek vs. College Park: Air remains warm and muggy, but the risk for activity increases to 50%. Game delays are possible if nearby lightning or heavier storm cells develop. “Let’s just hope that weather holds off, right?” Summer Creek coach Parker O’Quinn said earlier this week. “Us being the last game has got me super concerned.”
Atascocita (21-5-3) vs. Klein Cain (18-3-5)
What to know: The Hurricanes are back. Klein Cain is the defending state champion after winning the program’s first title last season under then-first-year coach Jerson Carrasco. Does the Hurricanes’ experience give them an advantage? It certainly doesn’t hurt. Klein Cain was pushed to the limit during last year’s championship match against Elsik. The Hurricanes finally prevailed with a 1-0 victory thanks to an overtime goal from star forward Parker Glenn, who was subsequently named the MVP of the match and the All-Greater Houston Player of the Year. Glenn has been the leader for Klein Cain once again during his senior season. Atascocita, meanwhile, remains in uncharted territory, making the first championship game appearance in program history. The Eagles had won just four playoff games before this season. During the current postseason run, they have five under the leadership of coach Jed Garner. Atascocita can claim the school’s first team state title since the boys track and field squad in 2024.
College Park (18-3-3) vs. Summer Creek (21-2-6)
What to know: Both College Park and Summer Creek are making their first state championship game appearance. Led by coach Mike Jaskowiak, the Cavaliers have tied their program record for wins during a single postseason, matching the five victories secured by the 2018-19 squad that lost in the semifinals. College Park has won seven consecutive games, including three straight shutouts. The Cavaliers had some tough battles early in the playoffs, beating Dekaney in overtime in the first round and ousting Magnolia West via shootout in the second round. Summer Creek, meanwhile, has completely flipped its outlook from last season. The Bulldogs finished 5-12-2 overall and went 2-10-1 in district play. Now, under coach Parker O’Quinn, the team has gone 9-0-2 over its last 11 games and has allowed just one goal across five playoff games. This will be the second meeting between Summer Creek and College Park this season after the teams played to a 1-1 draw on Jan. 2 in what was the second game of the year for both.
Kingwood (26-0-2) vs. Forney (28-1)
What to know: Aside from the Klein Cain boys, the Kingwood girls are the only Houston-area program competing this week that has previously won a state title. That being said, the most recent championship for the Mustangs came nearly three decades ago in 1999. Kingwood, which also won a title in 1995, will try to complete an unbeaten season when it takes the field against Forney on Saturday evening. The Mustangs have won nine consecutive games and have a chance to become the first team to win a Class 6A state title without a loss since Memorial, which finished 26-0-1 in 2018. Kingwood has a formidable opponent ahead with Forney, which has won 20 consecutive games since suffering its only loss of the season against Midlothian Heritage on Jan. 10. The Jackrabbits, ranked No. 21 in the country by MaxPreps, have allowed just one goal over their past seven games and have delivered four shutouts in the playoffs. Forney came up short against eventual champion Lewisville Marcus in the state semifinals last season.
