No. 4 Texas softball came close Saturday, but couldn’t tie the series against No. 2 Oklahoma — and the Longhorns have now lost five of their last six games.Â
An explosive fifth inning for Oklahoma gave it the 4-2 lead and its defense took care of the rest to clinch the series win. The Longhorns had chances late in the seventh, but couldn’t quite seal the deal to rebound from Friday night’s series-opening shutout. Â

“I thought they (Texas) battled really well,” UT head coach Mike White said. “We always want to come into that last opportunity.”Â
The Longhorns took an early lead in the first on Viviana Martinez’s RBI single, but a solo home run from OU’s Gabbie Garcia tied it in the second. Neither team crossed home plate until the fourth inning when freshman third baseman Jaycie Nichols’ RBI single put Texas up 2-1.Â
“That’s great for us going forward.We had some really good effort from people coming in different situations, and that’s what we need,” White said.Â

White made a pitching change earlier in the game to bring in sophomore lefty Brenlee Gonzales for freshman Hannah Wells. Through two innings, Gonzales contributed three strikeouts and in the fifth inning she was relieved by Citlaly Gutierrez after putting on two Sooners.Â
Oklahoma’s Kendall Well blasted Gutierrez’s 2-2 pitch to left field to give the Sooners the lead. But White stayed with Gutierrez, whose back-to-back strikeouts helped end the inning. Kayden Henry led off the bottom of the inning with a single, but OU struck out Katie Stewart and Reese Atwood. Martinez reached first on a fielding error and advanced on Leighann Goode’s RBI single to cut into OU’s lead, 4-3.Â

Texas had chances to tie it, but Oklahoma retired six straight batters in the last two innings. Left-hander Audrey Lowery came in for relief to put the Longhorns away and seal the Red River Rivalry series win.
“We had the right people up at the right time, but sometimes it just doesn’t work,” White said.Â
Texas has a chance to end its losing streak for the final game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon before they travel to Athens, Ga. for a road series against the Bulldogs next weekend.Â

A pair of groundouts and a Maloney catch at the wall put the Longhorns back on offense with the top of the order up to bat.Â
The bottom of Texas’ order goes 0–for-3 for a quick bottom half of the inning.Â

Sooners lead off with a walk. Stewart gets the second out following a foul ball close to the OU dugout. Gutierrez walks Parker and Pickering grounds out to end the inning.Â
Henry’s infield single gets her on base to lead off the inning. OU strikes out Atwood and Reese, but Martinez and Goode keep the frame alive with back-to-back-singles. Goode also notched her first RBI of the night to make it 4-3 Oklahoma. Maloney ends the inning leaving two stranded.

After Gonzales puts two runners on, Texas makes a pitching change to Citlaly Gutierrez. Wells blasts a three-run homer to left field to give OU a 4-2 lead. Gutierrez bounces back by striking out the next two batters, but infield mistakes load the bases. A flyout to right field ends the inning. Â
With a runner on, Sneed lays down a bunt and is initially called out; the call is overturned to put runners on the corners. In her first at-bat of the game, Nichols’ infield single gives the Longhorns a 2-1 lead. Bennett grounds out and leaves two runners stranded.Â

Atwood retires a baserunner for the first out and the Gonzales follows it up with a strikeout and groundout. It is still tied 1-1.

Longhorns get on the board with a Martinez RBI single, but the Sooners turn a double play on a line drive and a quick toss to second to retire Stewart.

After getting out the first two, Parker rips an 0-2 pitch to right-center field. She is stranded after Pickering grounds out to first.Â
