EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso County broke ground on its fourth parks improvement project that is being funded through the 2024 voter-approved bond.

Friday, April 10, County officials were out at Westway Park, 1301 Zinn Road, in Northwest El Paso County to break ground on the project.
County Commissioner Sergio Coronado, who represents the area, hailed the project, saying that the Westway community in the past has been “forgotten” in terms of basic infrastructure needs.
Coronado said that the voter-approved bonds will fund improvements at Ascarate Park, Gallegos Park and virtually all the County’s other parks.
“This is a great day but not just here in Westway. The people of El Paso voted to do improvements at all the parks in the County, Ascarate Park, Gallegos Park, all the other outlying parks in the community. We are going to invest in all of them,” Coronado said.
Planned upgrades at Westway Park: include a 10-foot-wide walking trail with illuminated bollards (safety posts); water fountains; picnic shelters and a covered basketball area.
In June 2025, Commissioners Court approved the first issuance of funds from the voter-approved bonds that are earmarked for park improvements. The County said it completed its first bond project in December 2025 and this is now the fourth one they are tackling.
