“From white-tablecloth tasting menus to legendary street food, America’s most compelling culinary cities reflect the diversity, creativity, and regional pride of the country itself,” the ranking read in part. “These destinations don’t just feed you well — they tell stories through local ingredients and homegrown flavors paired with global techniques and traditions.”

Among those named, Texas’ Houston and Austin nixed the competition and seared their way into the Top 10, with Houston edging out at No. 6 and Austin inched closely behind at No. 7. Comparatively, Austin dropped three spots from its No. 4 ranking in 2025, while Houston surged to the forefront from its No. 9 position last year.

With Houston, Food & Wine experts specifically highlighted its status as the most ethnically diverse city in the country and how that marries with its culinary array. Tex-Mex and Mexican, an array of Asian cuisines alongside Cajun and Southern classics are just some of the foodie opportunities praised.

Over in the Texas capital, Austin’s “legendary barbecue and vibrant food truck culture” play key roles in shaping the Live Music Capital of the World.

“Add a laid-back atmosphere, live music, and plenty of outdoor venues, and Austin offers a fun culinary experience,” Food & Wine experts noted.

Texas’ showing appeared against fierce industry competitors noted for their culinary prowess on a global stage. This year’s rankings awarded New York City as its winner, while Chicago, Los Angeles, New Orleans and San Francisco rounded out the Top 5. Trailing behind Houston and Austin were Philadelphia (No. 8), Charleston, South Carolina (No. 9) and Miami (No. 10).
