The Spelled Milk in Oak Cliff is known as the “cereal museum” — for good reason. It offers a massive collection of cereals, ice cream, milkshakes, toppings and other sweet treats. The shop also features imported candies and cereal merch and serves as a place to hang out and play board games with friends.

Owner Michael Goode was inspired to open the cereal bar after he had a near-death experience about six years ago. “I realized you only live once, and so I decided to go for it,” he said.

Why cereal? Well, Goode always loved the design and look of cereal boxes. As a child, he would go to the cereal aisle in grocery stories and marvel at them, admiring their art.

Goode and his business partner plan to open another shop in the McKinney-Allen area in about six to eight months. He said they’re deciding between three different locations for their next shop.

The current space in Dallas’ Bishop Arts District has been a hit since opening in 2023, drawing visits from celebrities including rapper Travis Scott. It’s one of the region’s only cereal bars, and Goode said it comes alive most late at night.

For dessert lovers, The Spelled Milk experience is like being a kid in a candy store. With options like mix-and-match cereal bowls — where you can put several cereals in one bowl and pair it with other treats — or handmade, new ice cream inventions, the order is up to the customer.

Literally. Goode said a customer once asked him to make a pizza-flavored ice cream that “surprisingly, wasn’t bad.” And if you think that’s weird, wait until you hear about the chicken-flavored ice cream.

The shop’s cereals are imported from around the world, from countries including Mexico, Germany, Portugal, India, Australia and New Zealand. Goode said The Spelled Milk’s cereal stock recently grew to over 1,000 options — a big milestone.

To celebrate, Goode said he’s thinking of throwing a party.

The Spelled Milk is at 712 W. Davis St., Dallas. A second location is expected to open in the McKinney-Allen area at an unknown date in 2026. www.thespelledmilk.com
