Higher home appraisals in Nueces County push homeowners to consider protests, exemptions and tax relief services before the May 15 deadline.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As property appraisal notices arrive across Nueces County, some homeowners are seeing higher values and considering whether to challenge them.
Nueces County Tax Assessor/Collector Kevin Keischnick said his office has received multiple reports of increased appraisals this year and urges property owners to act quickly if they believe something is off.
“If you’re concerned about your value, you need to contact the appraisal district — and you need to do it very quickly — because the deadline to file your protest is May 15,” Keischnick said.
Homeowners who don’t have time to navigate the process themselves can hire property tax relief companies, though experts say those services often come at a price — typically around 30% of any savings.
“There are a lot of really legitimate businesses that can do this for you,” said Katie Galan with the Better Business Bureau. “What you’re paying for is their expertise and their time.”
Still, Galan warned consumers to be cautious of companies making unrealistic promises.
“Red flags include businesses that try to guarantee savings before they’ve even reviewed your specific situation,” she said.
Keischnick noted that current estimates may not reflect final tax bills.
“Tax rates have not been adopted,” he said. “Some people have seen estimates, but those are based on last year’s tax rate and newly proposed values.”
Another way to reduce a tax bill is by ensuring all eligible exemptions are filed.
“If you’ve moved and need a new homestead exemption, or if you’ve turned 65, or have a qualifying veteran’s disability, make sure that information is submitted to the appraisal district,” Keischnick said.
Galan added that the Better Business Bureau has not received reports of property tax relief scams in the Coastal Bend.

With the May deadline approaching, officials say reviewing your appraisal and understanding your options could make a significant difference in your final tax bill.
