EL PASO, TEXAS — A deadly crash shut down a stretch of eastbound Highway 70 in Las Cruces on Tuesday morning.
Las Cruces police closed a portion of eastbound Highway 70 between Sonoma Ranch Boulevard and Mesa Grande Boulevard after the crash, which occurred about 7:30 a.m. along the eastbound lanes.
Both eastbound lanes were temporarily closed, and traffic was being detoured off the highway at Sonoma Ranch.
Police said preliminary information from the scene indicates the driver of a pickup may have suffered a medical episode that led to the vehicle striking the cable barriers dividing the highway.
The pickup then struck another eastbound vehicle. No injuries were reported in the second vehicle.
Police urged westbound drivers to avoid rubbernecking or using a camera while traveling through the area, noting that one westbound crash had already been reported and was believed to be the result of driver inattention while passing the crash scene.
New Mexico State Police is expected to handle the investigation into the deadly crash.
