LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The City of Lubbock is launching a redesigned website April 22, marking the first update since early 2018.
Lacey Rose, the city’s director of communications, said the update comes after hearing resident feedback for some time.
“With this new site, we wanted people to be able to click less but find more,” Rose said.
Rose said the previous website had navigation issues.
“It wasn’t very navigable. It was hard to find things, the search option wasn’t very helpful in many instances, and on the back end of content updating, it was actually a hard content management system for staff to adequately update,” Rose said.
New features and layout
After months of work, the new website features an updated layout showcasing a video of the city skyline and the city’s seal.
“The things we’ve put in more dominant buttons are the things people go to the website first and foremost for, so we wanted that right where you could see it,” Rose said.
The site will allow users to find information regarding dozens of departments and city leaders, view meeting agendas, sign up for updates about different points of interest and more.
Accessibility improvements
The redesign is designed to ensure everyone has the opportunity to access content. A recent update to Title Two of the Americans with Disabilities Act meant local government websites needed to become compliant with new standards.
“Our website now, it can translate to Spanish, but now, it’s partnered with Google translate, so you have 200+ languages. We also have our little accessibility guy, you’ll see him on the left side of your screen,” Rose said.
The city is hoping the project allows residents to stay updated about what’s going on in Lubbock and learn more about it. The website’s URL will stay the same.
