Drink and drive during Fiesta and face the consequences — the San Antonio Police Department and Bexar County Sheriff’s Office will be patrolling the streets with zero tolerance for driving while intoxicated.
Police Chief William McManus said during a recent news conference that DWI units will be watching “like hawks” as revelers flock to their favorite events.

While the department won’t be increasing its usual DWI patrols, those officers typically make more arrests during Fiesta than in normal weeks, spokesperson Camelia Juarez told the San Antonio Express-News.
Last year, officers made 147 DWI arrests during Fiesta, accounting for just under half of the 340 arrests made during the entire month of April.
Police don’t expect that to change for Fiesta 2026. The numbers have been fairly consistent in recent years: Officers made 139 DWI arrests during Fiesta 2024 and 159 during Fiesta 2023.
“We have DWI units all over the city that are on the highways and on the roads mostly, and so they’re keeping an eye out,” Juarez said.

For those who end up in handcuffs, an arrest will likely cost them more than just a trip to jail. The Texas Department of Transportation estimates that a DWI can cost up to $17,000 in fines, bail, legal fees, insurance and restitution.
Added to the financial costs are the possibility of losing your driver’s license, employment opportunities and future housing. Those convicted on felony DWI charges for repeat offenses or aggravating factors will also lose their ability to vote and own a firearm.
In the long run, authorities say it’s much cheaper to find a sober ride.
“We’re advising people to carpool, rideshare, and just definitely don’t get behind the wheel after having too many drinks,” Juarez said.

Free and cheap rides for Fiesta 2026
There are a few different options for Fiesta-goers who plan to enjoy a few drinks, even for those who don’t live close to the events.
VIA Metropolitan Transit is offering park and ride service for $1.30 each way during the following events: Oyster Bake, River Parade, Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA), Battle of Flowers parade, Fiesta Flambeau parade, Taste of New Orleans and King William Fair.

VIA bus passes and U-passes are valid for park and ride service.
Children under age 5 ride free. Students, military service members, seniors and other groups may be eligible for a discount, bringing fare to just 65 cents each way.

Tips for finding a safe ride during Fiesta 2026
Authorities recommend planning ahead before donning your flower crowns and medal sashes.
Rideshare services will be available around the city, and passengers can cut down on costs by riding with a group and splitting the fare. Uber and Lyft have offered deals for Fiesta passengers in past years, but the companies have yet to share details on possible discounts this year.
Anyone planning to drink at all, even if it’s just one beverage, should have a designated driver, according to TxDOT. If you drink more than expected, consider calling a friend or family member for a ride.

Drivers can also find a safe place nearby to wait until they sober up.
What to do if you spot a dangerous driver
Anyone on the roads who sees a vehicle driving erratically or dangerously should call 911 immediately, Juarez said. If possible, provide dispatchers with your approximate location and a description of the vehicle.

“That way, officers can immediately respond to that call, that area, and make sure that other drivers are safe,” she said.
