West faced criticism last month after deciding to hold separate primaries from Democrats then rejoining them for the May runoff.
DALLAS — Allen B. West, chairman of the Dallas County Republican Party for more than two years resigned his position on Wednesday.
West confirmed his resignation to WFAA in a text message on Wednesday afternoon but did not reveal his reason for leaving.
West faced criticism last month for deciding to hold separate primary elections from Democrats. The decision eliminated the popular countywide voting option and forced voters to return to their local precincts.
It led to confusion for hundreds of voters, and some said they were unable to find the right location to cast ballots.
Two weeks ago, in his weekly newsletter, West acknowledged that his own party then got upset with him when he decided to rejoin Democrats and hold a joint primary in the May 26 runoff election.
At the time, West refused to resign.
The party’s executive committee meets again on April 20 and could have moved to fire him.
Dallas County Republican voters first elected West on March 5, 2024. He defeated the incumbent chair with more than 70-percent of the vote.
Tami Brown-Rodriguez, vice chair, will now take over party leadership.
Internal rules state the party’s executive committee must have an election within 30-days to formally replace West.
