Meteorologist Ryan Shoptaugh has recently appeared on KHOU 11, though he’s not based in Houston. Instead, he’s part of a broader shift in how some stations are staffing their weather coverage.
Shoptaugh stepped into a new role in January as a multi-market meteorologist for TEGNA, working out of KENS 5, where he’s been on air since 2021. The position allows him to appear across multiple stations, filling in during major weather events, vacations or staffing gaps.
The approach reflects a growing model across station groups like TEGNA and Nexstar Media Group, where meteorologists can step in across markets rather than each station maintaining a deep bench of backup talent. In some cases, stations are also leaning on centralized or digital-first weather coverage, including videos produced for websites and platforms like YouTube.
Before landing in San Antonio, Shoptaugh worked at TEGNA sister station KIII, starting in 2018. He got his start in the Rio Grande Valley at CBS 4 KGBT. A San Antonio native, he graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word and William J. Brennan High School.
His recent appearances in Houston come after the departure of former KHOU meteorologist Pat Cavlin, who left the station in February after four years. As of March 2026, Cavlin is now at WPIX 11 in his hometown of New York City.
