Now, his family wants justice.Â
“You never know, it could happen to anyone,” JJ’s aunt Viviana said. “It could be them here today, and not us. This has to stop. It’s so  much hate, so much violence.”
Moreno said JJ was just a senior and ready to take the next step.
“OSHA safety — that’s what he wanted to go for,” Moreno said. “He was following the footsteps of his older brother Christian and (he) was giving him advice and pretty much showing him the way and stuff,” Moreno said.
As Andrew Garza cleans the scene up at his barbershop Get Faded, he said the incident took him back two years ago.
“It’s unfortunate because I used to speak the same words to my son and it could literally happen within a blink of an eye,” Garza said.
Gun violence killed Garza’s son Andrew Lee Garza Jr.
“This is definitely a statement because not only was it my son’s anniversary — and I was just speaking to a principal about advocating — this happens right next to my barbershop,” Garza said. “And — big thanks to my barbers who rushed to this kid’s aid.”
Moreno said they’re grateful to everyone who helped him.
“They did try to hold his wounds down and clean his mouth and try to fix him — (I’m) very grateful for them for helping,” Moreno said.Â
For JJ’s family, they’ll continue to fight for justice.Â
“He was excited about the future ahead of him. His kindness, laughter, and warm spirit will never be forgotten. Though his time with us was far too short, the love he gave will remain in our hearts forever,” Moreno said.
Garza said it wasn’t by chance that this happened outside of his barbershop. His team is working on offering help to JJ’s family and will announce those details soon.
The investigation is ongoing. If you have any information on the shooting call Crime Stoppers Corpus Christi at 888-TIPS (8477).
The family of JJ has put together a GoFundMe, which can be found here.
