EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — In Far East El Paso, drivers are gathering for a pre-race meet-up at Desert Junkies Motorsports in anticipation of several local racing events.
“My family has over like 35 years in the racing scene. I grew up on this,” said Jose Najera, who is surrounded by twin Ford Broncos, each pushing more than 1,000 horses under the hood. “This is a 479 Bronco. My dad had it for probably like over 25 years already. It used to be a house for chickens, but he built it he made it into a race truck.”

Najera and several drivers are getting ready for a busy stretch in the weeks ahead, with several local races in the works, including a friendly matchup at La 42 Sand Drags in Clint on Sunday.
“With our friends at La 42, it’s Can-Ams and ATVs, but right there it’s like a play day,” said Najera.
“You just show up, go there, have fun with your family, cook out, look at the races and all that,” said Jose Avila. “They’re really fun, I’m gonna tell you that.”
But later this month, Najera will join other local racers at the West Texas Shootout at the Texas Sand Motorplex in Fort Hancock.

Across the shop is the team from Tequila’s Event Center. They’re the owners of Desert Sand Dragway in Fabens and they are gearing up for a race on their mud track on May 24.
“It’s in our blood. Yeah, we’ve been doing this for a long time,” said Javier Fabela, from Tequilas Event Center. “We would like to invite everybody to come and have a good time and yeah come and bring their families and have a good time.”
