HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team fell in its Big 12 series opener against #25 Arizona State at Cougar Softball Stadium on Friday.

The Cougars (20-26, 3-16 Big 12) and Sun Devils (33-13, 6-10 Big 12) battled to a tightly contested opening six innings, drawing level at 2-2 before a three run seventh frame from Arizona State made the difference on the night.

Senior Kylei Griffin produced a pair of hits on the night, marking her fourth multi-hit outing of the season and seventh of her career.
Griffin has now recorded multi-hit performances in her last three games, totaling eight hits and two homers in the stretch.
Junior Bethany Aguilar has now recorded hits in back-to-back games for the third time this season, totaling six in her last five outings.
With a hit on the night, sophomore Isabel Cintron has now produced eight hits in her last five games.
Sophomore Ariel Redmond collected her 40th hit of the season with a double in the second inning, marking her fourth of the year.

KEY INNINGS

2nd | Leading off the bottom of the second, Griffin belted her third homer of the season with a solo shot to left center for the game’s opening score.

6th | After a leadoff walk to junior Makenna Mitchell, Griffin delivered yet again with a single down to center field. A throwing error in the infield opened the door for Mitchell to reach home and level the game at 2-2. 

UP NEXT

Houston returns for game two against Arizona State with first pitch set for noon, Saturday. All games will be streamed on ESPN+. Senior Day celebrations honoring Mandy EsmanKylei GriffinParis Lehman and Gabby Rawls will take place prior to first pitch.
