Police on Saturday arrested a 41-year-old man charged with murder in connection with a shooting the evening before that left a 37-year-old man dead near a Lubbock convenience store.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired about 10:36 p.m. Friday in the 5900 block of Avenue P, according to a statement from Lubbock police.

Upon arrival, officers located 37-year-old Jonathan Trevino with a gunshot wound. Trevino suffered serious injuries and was taken by EMS to University Medical Center, where he later died.

A Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit callout was initiated.

Through the initial course of the investigation, it appears, Trevino and Tommy Rios, 41, were inside a convenience store in the 5900 block of Avenue P.

At some point, Rios exited the convenience store and when Trevino exited, a verbal altercation ensued.

Police say Rios produced a firearm and shot Trevino before fleeing the scene.

Investigators with the Lubbock Texas Anti-Gang Center conducted surveillance for hours in the 1600 block of 59th Street, and Rios was taken into custody without incident at 2:07 p.m. Saturday.

LPD SWAT responded to serve the warrant on Rios.

Rios was taken to the Lubbock County Detention Center and booked on one count of murder. He is being held on a $300,000 bond.

Other information about the circumstances leading to the shooting and how the two men knew each other was not immediately clear as the investigation is ongoing.
