LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Inside the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, more than 100 artists from across the country were setting up for the Lubbock Arts Festival on Saturday, an event organizers say is designed to leave a lasting mark on the community.
Carolina Adianos, a member of the festival’s board of directors, said the goal each year is to deliver a “wow” factor for visitors as they walk through the doors.
“We have over 100 artists getting set up right now from all over the nation,” Adianos said. “Each year we try to have that ‘wow’ effect and as you can see, it doesn’t get much more ‘wow’ than this.”
One of the first exhibits visitors encounter is by artist Miriam Dubinsky, whose work helps set the tone for the event. Dubinsky said she hopes her pieces encourage people to explore their own creativity once they leave the festival.
“I hope when people see it, they go back to make a collage, screen printing, or painting,” Dubinsky said. “Hopefully that inspires them to do something creative in that sense.”
Artist Nara Montuy, who has participated in the Lubbock Arts Festival for the past four years, said she also wants her work to connect with the public in a positive way.
“You know life is hard as it is,” Montuy said. “I want to have an art that when you see it, it makes you happy.”
Local emerging artist Rachel Kiwior specializes in upcycling vintage fabric into new creations. Kiwior said the festival is as much about meeting the artists as it is about buying artwork.
“I hope everyone comes out and interacts with the artist,” Kiwior said. “So just coming, even if you don’t buy anything, just to see what’s out there, you open a door to a whole new world.”
The Lubbock Arts Festival continues Sunday at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, featuring a wide range of exhibits and opportunities for visitors to engage with artists from near and far.
