Police said the shooting happened on Thursday evening, just after 6 p.m., at Dodd Park.

WYLIE, Texas — Wylie police say a 17-year-old Wylie ISD student died from his injuries after a shooting at Dodd Park Thursday evening.

The following day, the family of 17-year-old Ty’Ron Kuria said they are grieving and searching for answers.

“They took my sister’s lastborn, and it’s just eating her alive,” said Raekeia Jenkins, Kuria’s aunt.

Jenkins said she learned of her nephew’s death while on her way to see him in Tyler.

“On the way up here, I got the call that he didn’t make it… on the way up here,” she said.

She described Ty’Ron as a loving teen who was always around family and had a bright future ahead. He was supposed to graduate from high school next year.

“My nephew won’t be able to walk that stage… my sister’s not going to be able to clap for him and congratulate him,” Jenkins said.

Police said Kuria was at the park with friends when the shooting happened. Investigators said multiple witnesses heard several gunshots and saw people running from the area. Officers later found Kuria in a nearby field with gunshot wounds. He later died from his injuries.

Wylie ISD confirmed Kuria was a student at the high school and a former student at Achieve Academy. In a statement from Achieve Academy, it wrote quote “Ty’Ron was a valued member of our campus”.

The statement from Wylie High School said in part, “He was well loved by his friends, teachers, and administrators on every campus he attended.”

“They took that from him and so much more,” Jenkins said. Police said they are working to identify those responsible and are continuing to investigate the shooting.

Jenkins had a message for whoever is involved.

“To the people that took his life, I just don’t understand why you would do that… your day will come,” she said. “Ain’t no point of hiding, you might as well turn yourself in.”

As the investigation continues, the family says they are left holding onto memories — and hoping for answers.
