The Dallas Mavericks have reached a breaking point with the Dallas Stars. The Mavericks filed a 253-page petition Tuesday “seeking legal finality on a breach of contract dispute the Mavericks raised in October 2024,” per The Dallas Morning News.

In that dispute, the Mavericks argued the Stars are in breach of contract of a clause in their 1998 franchise agreement that states the team’s headquarters must be located in Dallas. The Stars’ headquarters and facilities have been located in Frisco since 2003, per The Dallas Morning News.

The Mavericks also accused the Stars of obstructing maintenance and improvements to American Airlines Center, where both team play their home games.

The Mavericks originally called out the Stars last year, weeks before both the Mavericks and the city of Dallas accused the Stars of backing out of a $300 million deal that would have renovated American Airlines Center, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Both the Mavericks and Stars disagree over key aspects of that deal. The Mavericks and the city claim the Stars agreed to remain at American Airlines Center through 2061. In that deal, the Mavericks and the city were reportedly set to split the cost of renovations, with the Stars not paying anything. The Stars claim that’s not the case. The team claimed the 2061 deal, had it gone through, would have resulted in the Mavericks and Stars splitting the cost of renovations. The Stars said they agreed to a different deal, in which both the Stars and Mavericks committed to remaining at American Airlines Center through 2035.

With their filing Tuesday, the Mavericks are seeking to be recognized “as the sole owners of the ‘Arena entities,'” according to The Dallas Morning News. In the dispute, the Mavericks accused the Stars of “holding the American Airlines Center hostage.”

The Mavericks’ and Stars’ current lease with American Airlines Center is set to expire in 2031. Both teams are reportedly looking for new places to play once that lease ends. The Mavericks are reportedly seeking a new basketball-only arena in Dallas. The Stars are reportedly fielding offers from Plano and Frisco, per The Dallas Morning News.

Those plans could change if the Mavericks are recognized as “the sole owners” of American Airlines Center.

It’s unclear whether the Mavericks’ petition will lead to a ruling any time soon. Until a ruling is made, both teams will continue to play at American Airlines Center.

The Stars are set to host the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. The Mavericks will play the Indiana Pacers at home Wednesday.
