EL PASO, Texas — An 18-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle, resulting in a fatal crash early Saturday morning, according to El Paso police.

Police responded to the single-vehicle crash at 6550 Gateway East around 1:44 a.m. The driver, Diego Campos, of East El Paso, Texas, was traveling east when his 2003 Mercury Mountaineer slid sideways into a utility pole. Jennifer Lopez, a 16-year-old rear passenger from East El Paso, Texas, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and later died, according to a press release from the department.

The vehicle also carried two other passengers: 17-year-old Dominic Vasquez, of Socorro, Texas, and a 15-year-old female from Central El Paso, Texas. The Special Traffic Investigation unit is continuing its investigation into the incident.

This marks the 16th traffic fatality in El Paso this year, compared to 21 at the same time last year, stated the source.
