SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama’s thrilling start to the season continued with a near-perfect game in a 121-103 win over the Toronto Raptors. He scored a team-high 24 points on 7-of-8 shooting and went 10-of-10 from the free-throw line while also finishing with 15 rebounds. San Antonio reached 4-0 for the first time since the 2017-18 season, tying the best single-season start in team history.
San Antonio has won 10 straight games since the preseason began and holds the best record in the NBA, all with supermax point guard De’Aaron Fox out with a hamstring strain.
“We always love playing basketball no matter what, but it’s a little easier to go to bed at night when you win,” Wembanyama said. “It’s easier to do the hard things for recovery or scouting or little efforts on the court, because you have the results right in front of your eyes. So it’s a positive cycle.”
Wembanyama, who was named the Western Conference player of the week Monday morning, had a modest game compared to the lofty standards he set in the opening week. Sunday, he became the first player in NBA history with at least 100 points and 15 blocks in his first three games of the season. Though he had only one block against Toronto, he continues to put on a dazzling display of ballhandling and playmaking that has made him one of the most impactful players in the NBA early on.
He joins Giannis Antetokounmpo as the only players in the last 40 years to open a season with four consecutive 20-point, 15-rebound games, per Stathead. Antetokounmpo went on to win MVP honors for the first time in his career.

Wembanyama is far from the only player on the team exceeding expectations early on. Stephon Castle has built off his rookie-of-the-year campaign by being a defensive menace and attacking the rim at will. No. 2 pick Dylan Harper has put together a compelling case for rookie and sixth man of the year. Devin Vassell has looked his best in years now that he is fully healthy, while Keldon Johnson has thrived coming off the bench as essentially a power forward.
Most of the Spurs roster spent the late summer working out together ahead of training camp. As a result, the team’s chemistry has been notably stronger than it looked a year ago.
“The vibes are high in the locker room,” Harrison Barnes said. “There’s a lot of trust to go around, there’s a lot of confidence to go around for anybody.”While the team has veteran leaders such as Barnes, Johnson and Vassell, San Antonio has relied upon a slew of players in their early 20s to fill out the rotation effectively. Even Johnson and Vassell, who have been with the Spurs for years, have little postseason experience.
They have little experience with even winning consistently. Four-game winning streaks have been rare for this franchise as of late after an extended dynastic run.
“It’s just reality that some of these guys haven’t been in this position. Forget even winning or losing, just playing big roles in this league,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. So, it will take time, and if we have the competitive response and right approach with that, along with putting our energy in the right spots, you can have a little success while you learn.”
Their undefeated streak will come to an end at some point and the league will continue to find ways to limit Wembanyama’s output. Vibes rarely remain high an entire season, but the best teams find a baseline that keeps them optimistic. Time will tell if the Spurs are truly ahead of schedule, but the team is enjoying the ride in the meantime.
“Whether we’re 4-0 or 0-4,” Barnes said. “I just feel the energy is different.”
