The Dallas Mavericks suffered one more loss Monday to conclude the 2025-26 season.

The NBA broke six ties between 13 teams to determine the order of selection for next month’s draft lottery, and the Mavericks lost the tiebreaker with the New Orleans Pelicans after both teams finished 26-56, tentatively slotting them with the eighth-best odds. The Pelicans will enter the lottery with the seventh-best odds.

Dallas has a 29% chance of moving into the top four and a 6.7% chance of being awarded the top pick for the second consecutive year. Those odds are slim, but far greater than the 1.8% chance the Mavericks had last year when they won the opportunity to draft Cooper Flagg.

New Orleans has a 29.3% probability of securing a top-four pick and a 6.8% chance of hitting the jackpot and landing the No. 1 pick, but the drawing was inconsequential for the Pelicans because their lottery pick will be conveyed to the Atlanta Hawks or Milwaukee Bucks. The Hawks trail 0-1 in their first-round playoff series against the New York Knicks.

The drawings were conducted by NBA President of League Operations Byron Spruell at the league office in Secaucus, N.J. The tiebreaker process was overseen by Megan DeCesaris, a partner from the accounting firm Ernst & Young.

The Mavericks will also have the rights to Oklahoma City’s 30th overall pick, which was acquired in the midseason trade that sent Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards. They also acquired the rights to the 48th overall pick, originally belonging to Phoenix.

The 2026 NBA draft will be held June 23-24 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Dallas won last season’s “coin flip” against the Chicago Bulls to earn the 11th spot entering the draft lottery. That circumstance marked a landmark moment because it led to the Mavericks moving up in the lottery for the first time in franchise history.

This year’s lottery is perfectly suited for the Mavericks to find Flagg’s long-term running mate, but they’ll have to wait a few more weeks for more clarity on where their pick will officially land.
